MADRID (AP) -- Former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva says he hopes Spain's far-left Podemos party will obtain a great result in the Dec. 20 national election.
In an interview published Thursday in Spanish newspaper El Pais, Silva said that although he has many friends in Spain's leading opposition Socialist party, he felt Podemos constituted "an extraordinary development."
He said Pablo Iglesias' party reminded him of his Workers Party in its origins, when one has great ambition and feels one can do everything.
Podemos has soared in popularity since being founded last year and is now ranked among the four parties with a chance of winning the election.
It has its roots in 2011 social protests by people angry over political and financial corruption.
