Ting Hsin attorney to review judges

Ting Hsin attorney to review judges

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A decision to appoint an attorney for controversial Ting Hsin International to a committee reviewing judges came under fire from judiciary circles Wednesday.
Three judges at the Changhua District Court enraged the public when they ruled last November 27 that former Ting Hsin Chairman Wei Ying-chung was not guilty of violating food safety laws in a high-profile trial surrounding the adulteration of cooking oil.
A key Wei attorney, Lo Feng-yin, received 580 votes last month to represent lawyers on the committee to review and evaluate judges beginning January 6. The body’s eleven members are chosen by judges, prosecutors, attorneys, academics and important personalities of high standing, reports said.
“With his left hand, (Lo) defended major corporations, and with his right hand, he reviewed the judges,” critics were quoted as saying. An internal Judicial Yuan online forum reportedly featured accusations from commentators that judges would buckle in front of lawyers like Lo, not daring to offend him.
The committee could reach decisions to punish judges who broke the rules, were partial or took on unauthorized extra jobs.
The Judicial Yuan responded to the criticism of Lo by saying it had no authority to refuse the appointment of committee members selected by outside groups.
Lo reportedly said he had had no private contacts with the judges at the Changhua District Court and had only interacted with them during the court sessions in the Ting Hsin case.
