Taiwan may see first snow of cold season

Taiwan could experience its first snow of the winter season on some of its highest mountains Wednesday night or Thursday morning, according to Central Weather Bureau (CWB) forecasts.

The cold front currently over Taiwan has brought sufficient moisture and ideal temperatures for the creation of snow on mountains over 3,000 meters, the CWB said, predicting that snow could come overnight in mountainous areas.

As for the rest of the country, rain is highly likely in northern and eastern Taiwan and parts of central and southern Taiwan, with heavy or even rainstorms possible in some areas.

Daniel Wu, an associate professor at National Central University and a former director of the CWB weather forecast center, said seasonal northeasterly winds will hit Taiwan after the cold front leaves and continue to disrupt the weather until Saturday.

Taiwan's skies should then clear up on Sunday and Monday before the next cold front arrives on Dec. 15.

Temperatures around Taiwan during the day on Wednesday will be between 23 and 25 degrees Celsius in eastern and northern Taiwan and between 26 and 27 degrees in the central and southern parts of the island.

But once the rain starts falling later Wednesday night, temperatures could hit lows of between 17 and 20 degrees. (By Chen Wei-ting and Lilian Wu)
