Chiayi City to launch E-bike rental Dec. 20

The southern city of Chiayi will launch a system on Dec. 20 to rent electric scooters and electric bicycles, as part of its efforts to promote environmentally friendly transportation.

Eleven bike rental stations have been built throughout Chiayi City at locations such as the railway station and the city stadium, and one more will be in place by the end of the year, Mayor Twu Shiing-jer said at a promotional event Tuesday.

The city is establishing the E-bike rental scheme to offer residents and visitors a convenient and environmentally friendly means of transportation, Twu said.

The Chiayi City government said it is setting up the rental system in collaboration with CityPower Taiwan Co., which sells electric scooters and electric bicycles and is already operating such rentals in New Taipei.

People registering in the bike rental system must be at least 18 years old and must hold a driver's license for light motorcycles (50cc or under), the city government said.

Payment can be made by EasyCard, a stored-value card used for mainly public transportation, the city government said, adding that from next year, Kaohsiung City's iPass will also be accepted. (By Chiang Chun-liang and Kay Liu)
