MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Prosecutors say a Mexico City detective who begged off work for sickness has been shot dead while attempting a robbery at an upscale shopping center.
He was accompanied by another detective who was on his day off. The accomplice was wounded and subdued by the bodyguard of the man they tried to rob as he came out of a bank in a suburb of the capital. Photos show the surviving detective even brought along his handcuffs to the robbery.
The Mexico City prosecutors' office said it will fire the surviving detective and investigate him.
The office said it condemned the detectives' "lack of loyalty to the agency and to society."
