Asustek becomes second most popular mobile phone brand in Malaysia

Taiwan's Asustek Computer Inc. has emerged as the second most popular mobile phone brand in Malaysia following the launch of its ZenFone smart phone series there.

Asustek launched the ZenFone series in Malaysia in the third quarter of 2014 and immediately seized a 7-8 percent share of the country's market. Through strengthened sales and marketing efforts, Asustek successfully increased its smartphone market share in Malaysia to 10-15 percent this year, ranking second only to South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co., which holds a 40 percent market share.

Company sources said Asustek will introduce its latest ZenFone Zoom model into the Malaysian market in the near future in cooperation with two of the country's leading telecom companies, Maxis and Digi.

It has yet to finalize details of plans to work with the country's largest telecom firm, Celcom, the sources said.

Asustek predicted that its smartphone market share in Malaysia will further rise to 20-25 percent next year, when 4G smartphones are expected to become the mainstream. (By Jeffrey Wu and Y.F. Low)
