Taiwan's Gogoro looking for markets in Europe

Paris, Dec. 4 (CNA) Taiwanese smart-scooter maker Gogoro Inc. said Friday it is hoping to expand its business footprint in Europe amid growing environmental awareness.

Speaking at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21), Horace Luke, the co-founder and CEO of Gogoro, said he wants to introduce the company's futuristic smart scooters to other parts of the world following booming sales in Taiwan.

"(It) is not simply a scooter, but a better, smarter and cleaner energy solution," he said at a side event of the conference.

The company has been nicknamed the "Tesla of Scooters" for its innovation. Some 2,500 Gogoro scooters have already hit the road in the Taipei area over the last six months and 100 units have already been installed in its energy network -- a modular battery-swapping infrastructure, he said.

Consumer response has been successful and Gogoro is targeting Amsterdam and Paris as its future markets, Luke said.

Both cities have well-established biking and bus systems, but still lack mid-range transportation solutions, which Gogoro could provide, he said.

During its exhibition during the COP21, Gogoro will also seek opportunities to talk with officials from the Paris government about possible partnerships in the future, according to Luke. (By Emmanuelle Tseng and Lee Hsin-Yin)
