Air quality remains poor in Kaohsiung, Pintung

The air quality in southern Taiwan's Kaohsiung City and Pintung County will remain poor Saturday, the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) said, adding that those suffering from breathing problems should refrain from strenuous activities outdoors.

The PM 2.5 indicator in Kaohsiung and Pingtung will range between level 4 and level 9 on the 10-point scale, the EPA said. The rest of Taiwan proper and the outlying islands will see the indicator staying below level 4, it said.

Level 7 or higher on the PM 2.5 index, which measures the concentration of pollution by particles 2.5 micrometers or smaller, indicates a severity enough to cause tangible discomfort and health problems, according to the EPA.

It is the third straight day of high PM level for Kaohsiung and neighboring Pintung because of a lack of wind to disperse pollutants in the air.

The elderly and people with chronic lung problems or heart disease should avoid prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical activity in the affected areas, the EPA warned. (By Zoe Wei and Jay Chen)
