Southeastern Taiwan prime area to view first sunrise of 2016: CWB

For people planning to see the first sunlight of 2016, Kenting National Park and Taitung County in southeastern Taiwan are two of the best locations, the Central Weather Bureau said Friday.

It said sunrise on Jan. 1, 2016 will be at 6:35 a.m. in the Longkeng area in Kenting and the Sanxiantai area in Taitung.

However, for sun chasers who wish to catch the very first rays of light on New Year's morning, Orchid Island off the east coast of Taitung will be their best choice as sunrise there will be at 6:33 a.m., according to the bureau's data.

New Year's morning activities have become popular among Taiwanese in recent years.

One such event is a flag-raising ceremony at Cape San Diego in New Taipei City, which drew around 60,000 people this year. The sunrise at that location -- the easternmost point of Taiwan proper -- will be at 6:37 a.m. next New Year's Day, the CWB said.

Another popular activity is a flight over the eastern county of Hualien to catch the first rays of sunlight on New Year's Day. China Airlines is operating a special charter flight CI 2016, which will depart Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport at 5:20 a.m. before flying over the coast of Hualien in eastern Taiwan on its way to Hong Kong.

Passengers can choose to return to Taiwan the same day or buy a Hong Kong tour package offered by the carrier.

The airline said Thursday that all 158 seats on the flight had sold out within 3 minutes.

Meanwhile, Taiwan Railways Administration said Friday that it will offer 16 extra services between Zhushan and Alishan stations from 2:20 a.m. to 6:10 a.m. on New Year's Day to transport people who want to watch the sunrise on Alishan at an altitude of 2,500 meters.

Other activities in the Alishan Scenic Area include an outdoor concert in Zhushan on New Year's morning. This year, the concert attracted an audience of around 15,000.

For the sunset watchers, meanwhile, the last rays on New Year's Eve will sink below the horizon on Taiwan proper at 5:25 p.m. and can be viewed in Tainan's Anping District or Kaohsiung's Sizihwan area, the CWB said. (By Chen Wei-ting, Wang Shu-fen and Kay Liu)
