German parliament backs Taiwan’s participation in ICAO

Ninety-four members in the Bundestag, Germany’s parliament, on Friday signed the petition in support of Taiwan’s participation in the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Klaus-Peter Willsch, the head of the Germany-Taiwan friendship group from the federal parliament, also a member of Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) asked on Friday the parliamentary support for Taiwan’s participation in international non-governmental organizations, including the ICAO and the UNFCCC.

According to a press release from Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), the European Parliament in 2010 voted overwhelmingly to pass a Resolution addressing its position on its support for Taiwan’s participation as an observer in relevant international organizations and activities.

And in 2013 and 2014, Taiwan received 68 and 86, respectively, cosigned letters from the German parliament members voted for the petition, seeing an increase in Germany’s support.
