New parliamentary election likely in Croatia after parliament fails to elect speaker

New general election likely in Croatia

ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) -- Croatia's parliament has failed to elect a speaker, and may be heading for new elections.

The country's general election last month was inconclusive, with opposition right-wing and ruling left-wing coalitions winning 59 and 56 seats respectively in the 151-seat assembly.

A newly formed reformist party Most -- or Bridge in English -- won 19, becoming a kingmaker.

Most's candidate for speaker, Robert Podolnjak, withdrew his bid on Thursday after he didn't get cross-party parliamentary support.

The two big parties have each so far failed in negations with Most on forming a new coalition government.

If the government is not formed soon, the country's president will have to call new elections.
