Poor air quality forecast through Saturday in southern Taiwan

The air quality in southern Taiwan is likely to remain poor through Saturday as there is little wind to disperse the air pollutants, the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) said Thursday.

Kaohsiung and Pingtung will experience the worse air quality during that period, with the PM 2.5 indicator there reaching level 8 on the 10-point scale, the EPA said.

In Yunlin, Chiayi and Tainan in southern Taiwan and in some parts of central Taiwan, a PM 2.5 pollution level of 7 can be expected, the EPA warned.

Levels of above 7 on the PM 2.5 index, which measures the concentration of pollution by particles 2.5 micrometers or smaller, are deemed severe enough to cause tangible discomfort and health problems, according to the EPA.

The elderly and people with chronic lung problems or heart disease should avoid prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical activity in the affected areas, the EPA warned.

People who suffer from with asthma may also need to use inhalers more often, it said.

In other parts of the country, the air quality should remain fair over the next few days, according to the agency. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
