Taipei, Dec. 2 (CNA) The number of new dengue fever infections in Taiwan increased by 301 on Tuesday, bringing the total since the start of May to 39,651, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Wednesday.

It said 285 of the 301 new cases were reported in Kaohsiung and 13 in Tainan, indicating that the outbreak was still concentrated in those two southern cities.

Since May, there have been 22,661 dengue fever cases in Tainan and 16,215 in Kaohsiung, according to CDC's daily update for Tuesday.

The outbreak in Tainan is showing signs of slowing down as there have been no cases of the mosquito-borne disease in 11 of its 37 districts over the past month, according to the CDC. The outbreak warning in those 11 districts have been lifted, the Tainan City government said Wednesday.

As of Tuesday, 184 people had died of dengue fever in around Taiwan since May.

Meanwhile, the number of imported dengue fever infections nationwide this year has risen to 316, most of them from Southeast Asian countries, according to CDC. (By Lung Pei-ning and Elizabeth Hsu)
