Local tech firm announced as sponsor of Taipei 101 fireworks

Taipei 101 announced Tuesday that local technology company BungBungame Inc. has agreed to sponsor the skyscraper's annual fireworks show this year.

"As Taiwan's tallest building, Taipei 101 has tried to showcase several Taiwanese brands and the glory of Taiwan on a world stage," BungBungame said in a statement, expressing its hope of making its brand more visible around the globe through the fireworks show.

The announcement came after a search that started in June for a suitable sponsor willing to put up NT$45 million (US$1.38 million) to cover the cost of the skyscraper's 11th annual fireworks show to welcome in the new year.

Themed "Nature is Future," the display is being designed to show images of fish and plants to raise environmental awareness. At 238 seconds, it will be the longest since the skyscraper's formal inauguration on Dec. 31, 2004, according to Taipei 101.

BungBungame was established in 2008 as a software developer and has created several apps for devices across the Android, iOS and Windows platforms. It began selling tablets and smartphones in 2012 and has set up operations in the United States, the United Kingdom and Japan.

The iSee Taiwan Foundation was only announced in late December 2014 as the sponsor of the previous display, prompting Taipei 101 to begin the search this year in June.

The operator of Taipei 101, Taipei Financial Center Corp., has suggested previously that the sluggish economy has affected companies' willingness to sponsor the show.

It said it has also turned down offers from auto makers, alcoholic beverage firms and companies in the gaming industry over concerns about their image. Past sponsors of the firework displays include Sony, the Tourism Bureau, the Ting Hsin International Group and Nu Skin.
