Turn a corner, hit the jackpot

Turn a corner, hit the jackpot

A New Taipei man was driving in the Tamsui District of New Taipei after getting off work one day as usual, when he found the gridlock was serious and decided to make a detour, a local newspaper reported Tuesday.

After the unexpected turn, he saw a lottery shop and stopped, on the spur of the moment. He bought 10 tickets for NT$500 (US$15.3) and won the Big Lotto of NT$490 million, the China Times said.

Unable to believe his good fortune, he could only say that the "god of fortune must have led my way."

Hsueh Hsiang-chuan, chairman of the Taiwan Lottery Co., said that he has seen a lot of people winning the lottery, and that their common practice has been to buy lottery tickets on a regular basis. They also tend to be keen on charity and public interest work, according to Hsueh.

The lucky winner donated NT$10 million to the city government, and set up a toy bank so that underprivileged children or children living in remote areas can have some toys.
