National Pension Act revised to double childbirth subsidy

National Pension Act revised to double childbirth subsidy

The Legislative Yuan passed an amendment to a law Friday that is aimed at increasing maternity benefits for women covered by the national pension program.

Under the revised National Pension Act, the childbirth subsidy for an insured woman will be raised from NT$18,282 (US$560) to NT$36,564 for giving birth to one child. The subsidy will be increased proportionately if more than one baby is born from the pregnancy.

The amendment will provide more financial support for the insured covered by the national pension program, who are usually the most disadvantaged group in society, said lawmaker Liu Chien-kuo of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party, who initiated the revision to the act.

The revised act is expected to take effect early next year, he said.

Liu said that the national pension program covers around 3.6 million people.

The program covers citizens aged over 25 and under 65 who are not covered by pension programs for civil servants, military personnel, laborers and farmers. Pension programs for civil servants, military personnel and laborers also have similar subsidies for childbirth. (By Wen Kuei-hsiang and Elaine Hou)
