Large-size flat panel shipments forecast to fall 4.1% in 2015

Shipments of large-size flat panels larger than 7 inches in 2015 are expected to fall 4.1 percent from a year earlier, reflecting weakness in the global information technology industry, a research report said Friday.

Citing the report, Taipei-based research group WitsView said that shipments of large-size flat screens could reach 794 million units in 2015, a drop of 4.1 percent, marking the first year-on-year decline in shipments of large-size panels which are used for TVs, desk-top and lap-top computer monitors and tablets.

With purchases of large-size TVs on the rise, shipments of TV panels are expected to total 270 million units in 2015, lending support to the overall large screen sales, WitsView said.

In terms of panel areas, the research group said, shipments of large-size flat panels in 2015 are expected to grow 3.8 percent from a year earlier, WitsView said.

This year, shipments of TV screens 50 inches or larger are forecast to hit 48.70 million units, and since large-size TVs have become more affordable to consumers, shipments are likely to rise to 55.40 million units in 2016, WitsView said.

In 2016, overall shipments of large-size flat screens are expected to fall slightly from a year earlier to 793 million units, while in terms of panel areas, shipments are expected to grow 8 percent from a year earlier on the back of rising popularity of large-size TVs, the research report said.

WitsView said that as more and more consumers have shifted their attention to even larger TVs, shipments of flat panels that are 60 inches and larger are expected to rise to 8.4 million units in 2016, up from an estimated 6.8 million units for 2015.

The research report showed that major flat panel makers in the world have been intensifying efforts to develop 4K ultra-high definition panels for TV production.
