Dengue fever cases hit record high in Kaohsiung: CDC

The number of dengue fever cases in Kaohsiung has reached a record high of 15,022 since the start of May, breaking the city's whole-year figure for 2014, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Friday.

The southern city saw the worst dengue fever cases in the country last year, with 14,999 cases reported, the CDC said.

Nationwide, a total of 38,369 dengue fever cases had been confirmed this year as of Thursday, CDC data shows.

Among them, Tainan in southern Taiwan, which also bore the brunt of the mosquito-borne disease this year, recorded 22,608 cases, according to the CDC.

The CDC added that 174 patients had succumbed to the disease so far this year. (By Lung Rui-yun and Lee Hsin-Yin)
