MRT expands coin locker service to five more stations

Coin lockers have been installed in five more stations for use by the public as of Tuesday, bringing to seven the total number of stations with the service, Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation (TRTC) said.

The new coin locker locations include the Beimen, Ximen, Dongmen, Taipei 101/World Trade Center and Sanchong MRT stations and are equipped with an electronic pin code system, of which service hours are the same as the station operation hours.

The rates for the lockers are: NT$20 per hour for a large Locker, NT$10 per hour for a small locker and visitors will be charged for a full hour for use under an hour.

The TRTC started a trial storage service at Tamsui Station in 2013, and has since received favorable responses.

Statistics show that the usage of the lockers at Tamsui Station is about 80 percent on weekdays and nearly 100 percent during peak hours (12-7pm) on weekends.

Lockers were installed last June at Taipei Main Station and Zhongshan Metro Mall, which is connected to the main station, and usage there has averaged about 70 percent.

For the security of visitors' items and locker operation, the TRTC has enhanced patrols and set up CCTV monitoring to provide better services.

Any items stored over 24 hours will be removed from the lockers and be kept for at least 30 days. Items kept for over 30 days will be disposed of in accordance with related laws and regulations of the Civil Code.

The Taipei mass rapid transit system has a total of 117 stations, with a daily ridership of nearly 2 million.
