BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) -- Hungary's Olympic Committee says 16 mostly Eastern European countries support Budapest's bid for the 2024 Olympics.
Olympic committees from countries ranging from Albania and Austria to Poland, Serbia and Turkey on Monday backed a resolution proposed by Zlatko Matesa, the head of Croatia's Olympic body, saying Budapest was capable of hosting the games and its location made it their natural choice.
Bence Szabo, general secretary of the Hungarian Olympic Committee, says "Budapest is the right-sized city, it is an Olympic-sized city and those countries surrounding us will benefit from having a global sporting event hosted in the center of the region."
Los Angeles, Paris, Rome and Hamburg, Germany are the other cities bidding to host the 2024 Olympics. The host will be chosen in September 2017.
