Chinese ship caught in Taiwanese waters

A Chinese fishing boat was recently found in waters off the coast of southeastern Taiwan, where spying activities are often reported, the Coast Guard Administration (CGA) said Monday.

The 400-ton Chinese fishing boat Fu Yuan Yu 055 showed up on radar 10 nautical miles southwest of Orchid Island Nov. 21, according to the CGA.

A CGA vessel of the 15th Offshore Flotilla, based in the southeastern county of Taitung, reached the area that same day and found that the fishing boat was not working.

The CGA ordered the boat to leave, and the Chinese vessel complied, moving out of Taiwan's waters 24 nautical miles from the coast.

According to the CGA, Chinese vessels have previously been found to have been conducted reconnaissance missions or exploring underwater methane hydrate resources in the area. (By Tyson Lu and Kay Liu)
