App to protect car buyers through mileage verification

Taipei, Nov. 21 (CNA) A new feature was added to a free government app to protect car buyers from fraud by verifying the mileage of second-hand cars up for sale, Taiwan's Consumers Protection Committee said Saturday.

The app developed by the Directorate General of Highways (DGH), which provides information for motor vehicle drivers, will be able to check the mileage of any given car during its last two inspections.

App users can retrieve the records by putting information of both the car's license plate number and year of manufacture in the app, the committee said.

This function could help second-hand car buyers learn about the real distance the vehicle has traveled and avoid vehicles with an odometer that has apparently been tampered with, it said.

The service is also comprehensive, the committee said, as it covers the records of 6.3 million cars, over 80 percent of the automobiles registered under the DGH.

The cars not covered by this system are too new to go through an inspection, the committee explained. For more information about the app, go to https://www.mvdis.gov.tw/m3-emv-eng/. (By Yang Shu-min and Lee Hsin-Yin)
