UN urges release of all information on Hammarskjold death

UNITED NATIONS (AP) -- The U.N. General Assembly has unanimously adopted a resolution urging all countries -- especially the United States, Britain and South Africa -- to release all information on the mysterious 1961 plane crash that killed U.N. Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold.

An independent review of new information about the crash states that the United States and Britain retain some classified files, and says South Africa has not responded to several requests for information.

The 99-page report by a three-member panel released in July puts to rest claims that Hammarskjold was assassinated after surviving the crash but provides new information about a possible aerial attack or interference.

The resolution adopted by consensus Thursday asks Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to pursue pending requests for information made by the panel.
