Taichung, Keelung partner with Cisco to build smart cities

Taipei, Nov. 19 (CNA) The local governments of Taichung and Keelung signed a memorandum of understanding Thursday with American multinational technology company Cisco Systems Inc. to create smart city solutions in the two cities. In partnership with Cisco, Taichung will focus on building a smart public transportation network to create a free flowing traffic system, said Zhang Guang-yao, deputy mayor of the central Taiwan city.

The Taichung Gateway District will serve as the test ground for cutting edge urban technologies, which the local government hopes will result in a community that integrates smart production, ecology, and living, he said.

The Taichung City government is also aiming to build a low-carbon city, Zhang said, adding that the development of a smart city will contribute to sustainable growth and offer Taichung residents many new economic opportunities.

Meanwhile, Keelung Mayor Lin You-chang said his city's partnership with Cisco is expected to help create dynamic traffic and environmental management systems, energy control, business services, and smart city management.

He said the city government is looking at the possibility of building a Cisco Innovation Center in Keelung, with the ultimate goal of creating a "digital city" in northern Taiwan.

Cisco has worked internationally with Barcelona, Hamburg, and Chicago to create smart cities.

The smart city concept offers solutions for dealing with problems such as overcrowding and high energy use that come with rapid urbanization. (By Liao Jen-kai, Chao Li-yen and Lee Mei-yu)
