Authorities turn focus to Kaohsiung in fight against dengue fever

Taipei, Nov. 19 (CNA) The Central Epidemic Command Center will refocus its efforts against the ongoing dengue fever outbreak in southern Taiwan from Tainan to Kaohsiung, which recorded over 400 new cases Wednesday.

Taiwan as a whole recorded 458 new dengue fever cases that day, 429 of which were reported in Kaohsiung, pushing the total number of cases since May 1 to 35,345, according to the center set up in mid-September to tackle the disease.

A three-day campaign to remove breeding grounds for the mosquitoes that transmit the disease was launched in the southern port city Thursday, the center said.

The neighboring city of Tainan, which has been the hardest-hit in the current outbreak, with 22,461 cases since May, has seen the spread of the disease slow for the eighth week and recorded only 17 cases on Wednesday.

Vice Premier Chang San-cheng, who heads the center, instructed the Tourism Bureau to offer help to Tainan in efforts to rebuild the local tourism industry, which has suffered as a result of the outbreak.
