Eric Chu returns from U.S. visit

Taipei, Nov. 16 (CNA) Eric Chu (???), chairman and presidential candidate of the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) party, arrived back in Taiwan early Monday after a week-long visit to the United States as part of his presidential campaign. He waved to some supporters in the concourse but did not answer reporters' questions. Chu left Taiwan on Nov. 10 for for meetings with American officials including Deputy U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and scholars as well as Taiwanese expatriates in Los Angeles, Washington, New York and San Francisco. Soon after his return, Chu is expected to name his running mate and a United Daily News report Monday said that the KMT is likely to put Wang Jin-pyng (???), a veteran lawmaker and president of the Legislature, on the top of party's nominees for legislators-at-large. Chu faces a tough fight against Tsai Ing-wen (???), chairwoman and presidential candidate of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), who will hold a press conference later Monday to officially announce her running mate. Chen Chu (??), mayor of Kaohsiung and Tsai's campaign manager, has confirmed media reports that Chen Chien-jen (???), an epidemiologist and vice president of Taiwan's top research institution Academia Sinica will be the DPP's vice presidential candidate.
