No changes can be made to candidates after registration: CEC official

Taipei, Nov. 15 (CNA) Presidential candidates will not be allowed to change their running mate in the upcoming elections once they have completed the registration process, a Central Election Commission (CEC) official said Sunday. Candidates seeking to run in the presidential election are required to register together with their vice presidential candidate, after which, no changes can be made, said CEC Vice Chairman Chen Wen-sheng (???). According to an earlier announcement, the CEC will accept registration for the Jan. 16 presidential and legislative elections Nov. 23-27. Each pair of presidential and vice presidential candidates must submit a deposit of NT$15 million (US$456,690.52) when they register. Presidential candidates of the two major political parties -- Eric Chu (???) of the ruling Kuomintang and Tsai Ing-wen (???) of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party -- have not yet announced their running mates. On Saturday, Tsai responded to reports about Academia Sinica Vice President Chen Chien-jen (???) being picked as her running partner, saying that nothing has been confirmed and that she will make a formal announcement after a decision is made. Chu for his part said in Washington the day before that a formal decision on his running mate is expected to be made in the following week. (By Tang Pei-chun and Kay Liu)
