President to give press briefing on meeting with Xi

Taipei, Nov. 13 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou (???) will hold a news conference at 5 p.m. Friday to talk about his meeting last weekend with Chinese President Xi Jinping (???), a presidential spokesman said. Since a proposal for him to report to Legislative Yuan on the historic meeting was shot down by opposition lawmakers, Ma decided to hold a news conference instead to explain to the people various issues regarding the meeting, according to Presidential Office spokesman Charles Chen (???). The ruling Kuomintang had proposed inviting Ma to deliver a state of the nation report to the Legislature on his meeting with Xi, but the proposal was blocked by opposition lawmakers. Tsai Ing-wen (???), chairwoman and presidential candidate of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party, has accused Ma of failing to stand up for the Republic of China in his meeting with Xi or emphasize the part of the "1992 Consensus" that allows the two sides of the Taiwan Strait to each interpret "one China" as they deem fit. Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council has released the full text of Ma's remarks during his meeting with Xi in Singapore Nov. 7. (By Hsieh Chia-chen and Y.F. Low)
