Overseas students in Taiwan up by 60% over three years

Taipei, Nov. 10 (CNA) The number of overseas students coming to Taiwan to study for degrees increased by 60 percent over the past three years, according to the latest statistics released Tuesday by the Ministry of Education. Overseas students refer to foreign students, overseas Chinese (including those from Hong Kong and Macau), and those from mainland China. The number totaled 25,107 in 2011, and had increased to 40,078 as of 2014. Taiwan began to open its doors wider to Chinese students in 2011, and a total of 5,881 Chinese students studied for degrees in 2014, mostly in business management and engineering. The largest source of foreign students was Malaysia, followed by Vietnam and Indonesia. The ministry said it will step up its efforts to enroll students from overseas after the fruitful results of its higher education program exports. (By Chen Chih-chung and Lilian Wu)
