Air quality improves after filthy Monday

Taipei, Nov. 10 (CNA) Air quality in most parts of Taiwan got back to normal Tuesday, with only Taichung City and Puli Township of Nantou County in central Taiwan still reporting relatively high PM 2.5 levels, according to the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA). The Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) for Taiwan proper and outlying islands lies between fair and good after a day of particularly filthy air throughout the western part of Taiwan due to a lack of wind, the EPA said. The EPA lifted its air pollution alert but warned that air quality forecast indicates PM 2.5 levels could still go up in central Taiwan and areas to the south, including Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung and Pintung. PM 2.5 is fine particles smaller than 2.5 millimeters in diameter and is linked to several chronic health problems. The higher the PM 2.5 level, the worse the air quality becomes.
