NEW YORK (AP) -- A defense attorney has accused the government of using shady cooperators to make its case against an aging mobster in a decades-old New York City airport heist immortalized in the hit Mafia movie "Goodfellas."
In closing arguments on Monday at the Brooklyn trial of Vincent Asaro, lawyer Elizabeth Macedonio called the prosecution's witnesses "despicable people" and "accomplished liars."
Federal prosecutors have said the 80-year-old Asaro in his heyday helped plan the legendary $6 million armed holdup at a Lufthansa cargo terminal at Kennedy Airport in 1978. They also have accused him of continuing his life of crime with the Bonanno crime family into his twilight years.
The prosecution gave its closing argument on Friday. A jury is expected to begin deliberating on Tuesday.
