Lee on Ma-Xi meet: Singapore glad to have played 'modest role'

Singapore, Nov. 8 (CNA) Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong (???) said Saturday that his country is glad to have played a "modest role" in providing the venue for the historic meeting between President Ma Ying-jeou (???) and Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping (???) a day earlier. "Good to see you again, and to congratulate you in person on the breakthrough in cross-strait relations," Lee said in a Facebook post, in response to a message sent by Ma hours ago. "As an old friend of both Mainland China and Taiwan, and a country which has firmly upheld a One China policy, Singapore is glad to have played a modest role providing the venue for the meeting, just as we did with the Wang-Koo talks in 1993," Lee said. On Saturday, Lee revealed on his Facebook page that he caught up with Ma over tea during Ma's brief visit to Singapore for the summit with Xi. After his return to Taiwan, Ma left a message on Lee's Facebook page on Sunday expressing his appreciation to Lee for his "hot tea, tasty pastries and warm welcome." "Singapore has played a vital role in facilitating and witnessing peaceful development across the Taiwan Strait. Without you and your father, none of this could have happened," Ma said.
