U.S. scholar lauds Taiwanese after finding his lost iPhone 6S Plus

Taipei, Nov. 8 (CNA) An American scholar praised the kindness and hospitality of the Taiwanese people on Sunday after his lost iPhone 6S Plus was found during a recent visit to Taiwan and returned to him back in the United States. "The discovery of my phone was kind of a miracle," said Samuel Buell, a professor at Duke University School of Law and the former lead prosecutor of the Department of Justice's Enron Task Force. "I've been telling everyone the story, making Taipei, and its police department, legendary in Durham," he told CNA in an e-mail. In late October, the professor of law was invited by the Academy for the Judiciary under the Ministry of Justice to attend an international conference held in Taiwan. Buell bought an iPhone 6S Plus before his trip to Taiwan to capture the country's beautiful scenery, but he lost the phone while riding a YouBike, rented from Taipei's public bicycle rental system, around the city. He reported the case to the local police and also canceled a trip he had planned for after the conference to the popular tourist area of Kenting in southern Taiwan. "My hosts kept insisting that of course it would be found. I politely agreed, while thinking like an American -- a shiny new iPhone 6s+ lost on the streets of New York City would truly be lost. The chances of someone picking it up and turning it into the police would be about one in a thousand, if not one in a million," he said. When he was about to board his flight back to the U.S. on Oct. 29, however, Buell was informed by the police that his iPhone had been found. Two days later, it was delivered to him at his home in Durham. Police said it was discovered near Zhongzheng Bridge (???) and turned in by a woman named Yang Zi-yu (???) on Oct. 26, the same day the phone was lost. Buell said he would be writing a letter to thank the people who helped him but he wanted to especially thank Yang for finding and recovering his phone. (By Page Tsai and Jeffrey Wu)
