Xi calls for upholding '1992 consensus' in meeting with Taiwan's Ma

Singapore, Nov. 7 (CNA) Chinese President Xi Jinping (???) expressed hope in a historic meeting with President Ma Ying-jeou ( ???) of the Republic of China (Taiwan) on Saturday that the two sides will uphold the "1992 consensus." In his opening remarks in public at the start of the meeting, Xi also hoped that the two sides will move to solidify their common political ground, walk on the path toward peaceful development and keep cross-strait relations on the right path. "We are sitting here today to prevent a historic tragedy from happening again and to keep the fruits of peaceful development between the two sides from being lost," Xi said. The meeting is the first ever between leaders of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the People's Republic of China, which was founded in 1949 after the Communists defeated the Nationalists in China's civil war. The Nationalists moved the seat of the ROC government to Taiwan, which has blossomed into a self-governing democracy. Ma and Xi are meeting at the Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore. (By Elizabeth Hsu)
