Meeting between leaders of Taiwan, China begins

Taipei, Nov. 7 (CNA) The historical cross-Taiwan Strait leadership meeting between President Ma Ying-jeou (???) and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping (???) has begun and is expected to establish a mechanism for future leadership meetings between the two sides. Ma is expected to raise the issue of Taiwan's space in the international community. One of the examples is that China has yet to make clear its stance on Taiwan's participation in the China -initiated Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank using the name Chinese Taipei. Other stalled cross-strait issues could also come up at the meeting, such as the transiting of Chinese tourists via Taiwan to other destinations as well as a trade-in-goods agreement. Talks on establishing representative offices in each other's territory have also made little progress despite proceeding for a long time. Meanwhile, because China has deployed a large number of missiles targeting Taiwan, Ma could raise the issue given his comments on Thursday that the two sides need to continue to mitigate animosity. Another issue that could come up at the meeting is the sharing of historical documents, as 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the end of the war against Japanese aggression of China.
