President mum on whether he will address human rights in Xi meet

Taipei, Nov. 5 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou (???) did not say Thursday whether he will address the issue of human rights in China during his upcoming meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping (???) in Singapore, but pointed out that he already raises the subject every year. Responding to a reporter's question at a news conference, Ma said that "I speak about the issue every year on the anniversary of the June 4 Tiananmen Square Incident." He was referring to China's bloody crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in the square on June 4, 1989. The meeting between Ma and Xi scheduled for Nov. 7 will be the first between the leaders on the two sides of the Taiwan Strait in 66 years of separate rule. (By Lu Hsin-hui and Lilian Wu)
