Waste soil dumped near white crane habitat; 2 policemen nabbed

Taipei, Nov. 4 (CNA) Two police officers in New Taipei have been detained and held incommunicado on suspicion of taking bribes from a landfill operator engaged in illegal dumping of waste soil on a farm near the habitat of a young Siberian white crane, the Jinshan police precinct said Wednesday. The two police officers are now being investigated for corruption, according to the precinct. Keelung prosecutors said the two are also under investigation for dereliction of duty. According to the Jinshan police precinct, the two officers are accused of taking bribes and protecting the operator who is suspected of illegally dumping the waste soil on a farm on the opposite side of the habitat of the Siberian white crane in August 2014. The detention of the two policemen has again catapulted the rare bird, now about two years old, into the spotlight, after it arrived at the Chingshui Wetland in Jinshan, New Taipei last year and immediately drew attention, as it was the first time in recent memory that a Siberian crane had landed in Taiwan.
