Taiwanese, Chinese leaders' meeting cross-strait landmark: TAO

Nanjing, Nov. 4 (CNA) The planned meeting between Taiwan's President Ma Ying-jeou and Chinese President Xi Jinping is a landmark event in relations across the Taiwan Strait, China's Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO) chief Zhang Zhijun said Wednesday. Zhang said the meeting has been difficult to achieve, given the political risks, but will elevate Taiwan-China ties to a new high since 1949, when the communists seized control of the mainland. Considering the existing political division between Taiwan and China, Ma and Xi will meet as "leaders" of the two sides and simply address each other as "mister," in line with the "one China" principle, Zhang added. According to Zhang, the meeting to be held in Singapore Nov. 7 will begin with a session that is open to the press, followed by a closed-door session. The two sides will each hold a press conference after the meeting. Ma and Xi will then attend an evening banquet, Zhang said. (By Chang Shu-ling and Kay Liu)
