Ma-Xi meeting aimed at consolidating peace, prosperity: MAC

Taipei, Nov. 4 (CNA) The goal of an upcoming meeting between President Ma Ying-jeou (???) and Chinese President Xi Jinping (???) in Singapore is to consolidate the current peace and prosperity across the Taiwan Strait, the head of Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, Hsia Li-yan (???), said Wednesday. "The meeting of the leaders of the two sides of the strait will demonstrate the two sides' determination to maintain peace and prosperity in the Taiwan Strait and create a new milestone in the development of cross-strait relations," he said at a news conference. He said the Nov. 7 meeting will take place in a Singapore hotel. Ma and Xi will each deliver opening remarks before the meeting, and will hold respective news conferences after the meeting is over, he said. In holding the meeting, the two sides will stick to the principle of an equal footing and mutual respect, he went on. The meeting will not touch upon political negotiations, no agreements will be signed, and no joint statement will be issued after the meeting, he added. Hsia said that the main focus of the meeting is to consolidate peace and reiterate the "1992 consensus" as the basis for maintaining peace and prosperity across the strait, as well as to call on both sides to resolve disputes through peaceful means and expand bilateral exchanges and cooperation to create a stable foundation for cross-strait peace. "From our point of view, the meeting between the leaders of both sides of the strait is conducive to cross-strait peace and to maintaining the status quo in the Taiwan Strait," he said. Both sides will use the meeting as an opportunity to strengthen communication on major cross-strait issues, he said, adding that it is an important step in the full institutionalization of the development of cross-strait relations, he added.
