AIT: U.S. welcomes steps to improve cross-strait ties

"We welcome steps by both sides of the Taiwan Strait to reduce tensions and improve cross-Taiwan Strait relations. We encourage both sides to continue their constructive dialogue on the basis of dignity and respect," Sonia Urbom, spokesperson of the American Institute in Taiwan said Wednesday.

Urbom made the comment in response to a question from the Central News Agency regarding the scheduled meeting between President Ma Ying-jeou and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Nov. 7 in Singapore.

"The U.S. has a deep and abiding interest in peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. We welcome steps by both sides of the Taiwan Strait to reduce tensions and improve cross-strait relations," she pointed out.

"We encourage both sides to continue their constructive dialogue on the basis of dignity and respect. Consistent with longstanding policy, we remain committed to our 'one China' policy based on the three Communiques and the Taiwan Relations Act," she added.
