Acer looking to annual growth in Taiwan market in 2016

Taipei, Nov. 2 (CNA) Taiwan's Acer Inc. (??) expressed the hope Monday that its personal computer shipments in its home market will grow in 2016 despite a contraction in the overall PC sector. Towny Huang (???), president of Taiwan operations at Acer, said his company's local shipments of consumer notebooks and desktop computers in 2015 are expected to be flat or slightly higher than last year amid a 10 percent decline in the broader market. Acer's commercial PC shipments in Taiwan this year are expected to decline, however, due to fewer sales to the government, Huang said at a local exhibition fair for Windows 10 devices and applications held by the Taiwan branch of Microsoft Corp. Despite another "double-digit" decline forecast for Taiwan's consumer PC market next year, Huang expected Acer to register annual shipment growth in 2016 in both the consumer and commercial segments due to the company's new product offerings. He also estimated that Acer's notebook market share will increase from around 23 percent to 24 percent this year to 28 percent next year. Eddie Wu (???), general manager of the consumer channels group at Microsoft Taiwan, said at the exhibition that Windows 10 has been available in more than 190 devices in Taiwan since the touch-friendly OS was launched globally on July 29. As roughly 2.5 million to 3 million PCs are sold in Taiwan every year, Wu estimated that over 7 million PCs in the country are currently ready for free upgrades to Windows 10. The touch-friendly Windows 10, which features the return of the "start menu" and will run across PCs, tablets and smartphones, is Microsoft's latest attempt to win over mobile users and features a new browser called "Edge." Windows 10 also comes equipped with "Cortana," a digital assistant similar to Apple Inc.'s Siri and Google Inc.'s Now. (By Jeffrey Wu)
