Thirty trapped in creek flash flood in Hualien

Taipei, Nov. 1 (CNA) Some 30 people who visited a creek-side hot spring Sunday in Wanrong Township in Hualien County, eastern Taiwan, found themselves unable to cross the river to safety and became trapped on the riverbank after heavy rain caused the river to rise rapidly. Firefighters from Wanrong, Fenglin, Guangfu and Shoufeng were dispatched to Wanli River after receiving an emergency call at around 10 a.m. The visitors, including some children, were not local residents. As of 1 p.m. that day, seasonal winds and weather fronts had brought more than 100 millimeters of rainfall in 24 hours to many townships in the county, including Wanrong, Fenglin, Guangfu and Shoufeng.
