Taipei 101 lights up to celebrate Turkey's Republic Day

Taipei, Oct. 29 (CNA) The Taipei 101 skyscraper celebrated Turkey's Republic Day Thursday by putting up lights in red and white, the two colors of Turkey's national flag. As dusk fell, Taipei 101 lit up its characteristic "eyebrow lights" in red and white on the exterior of the building. It is the first time that Taipei 101 has done so to celebrate the national day of a foreign country, said Ismet Erikan, representative of the Turkish Trade Office in Taipei, at a Republic Day dinner party in Taipei that night. He said Turkey-Taiwan ties have warmed since the launch of direct flights between the two sides this March, but stressed that there is still room for improvement and that he hopes to soon see double-digit growth in bilateral trade volume. "I sincerely hope that the direct flights to be launched in March 2016 by EVA Airways as they announced lately will help to boost our relations," Erikan said at the event, which was attended by foreign representatives in Taiwan. Vice Foreign Minister Vanessa Shih (???), who attended the event, said Taiwan expects to complete its electronic visa application system by the end of this year, and Turkey is expected to be among the first group of countries for which it is used. She said the Turkish market presents great business opportunities for Taiwanese companies. Over 25 Taiwan-based enterprises, including TECO Group, have collectively invested approximately US$200 million in Turkey, creating over 5,000 employment opportunities there, Shih said. The Taiwan-Turkey Business Association was also inaugurated in August this year, Shih noted, adding that she is confident that trade and investment ties between the two countries will grow even closer in the near future.
