Taiwan extends congratulations to Guatemalan president-elect

Taipei, Oct. 28 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou (???) has sent a letter of congratulations to the newly elected president of Guatemala, Jimmy Morales, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement Wednesday. The letter was delivered to Morales, a member of the Central American country's National Convergence Front, by Taiwan's ambassador to Guatemala, John Lai (???), soon after he won the presidency Oct. 25, the statement said. Guatemala is one of the 22 countries that maintain diplomatic relations with Taiwan. The bilateral ties were established in 1933, since which time, the two nations have promoted many bilateral cooperative programs. Taiwan will try to further boost the cooperative relations with Morales's administration on the basis of friendship, the ministry said. The inaugurations of the president and vice president are slated to take place Jan. 14 next year, with the new leaders serving four-year terms. (By Tang Pei-chun and Elizabeth Hsu)
