3,500 ducks culled in Pingtung due to bird flu outbreak

Taipei, Oct. 24 (CNA) Some 3,500 ducks on a farm in Pingtung County's Gaoshu (??) township were culled Saturday after a highly pathogenic strain of the avian influenza virus was detected on the farm, the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine said. Poultry raised on the farm were sampled for tests because it is near another farm where avian influenza virus had been discovered, the bureau said. Test results released Friday showed that the ducks were infected with a new strain of the H5N2 avian influenza virus, according to the bureau. In another case, the bureau said a batch of chickens processed at a slaughterhouse in Taitung County has been destroyed after it was confirmed Friday that they have been infected with a new strain of the H5N2 virus. The chickens were from three farms in Pingtung County's Gaoshu, Fangliao (??) and Shinpi (??) townships, the bureau said, adding that there are currently no chickens on the farms right now.
