Taiwan to host WCIT 2017

Taipei, Oct. 21 (CNA) Taiwan will hold the World Congress on Information Technology (WCIT) in 2017 as a way of boosting the information and communications technology in the world, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) said Wednesday. In addition to facilitating global ICT technology, said Shen Jong-chin (???), deputy economics minister, the move by Taiwan to host the WCIT, dubbed the Olympics of the world's information technology industry, is expected to allow the world to see the country's clout in technology development. Shen said the WCIT 2017 is expected to show Taiwan's strength in integrating its efforts in hardware and software development to the world. The MOEA said that the 2017 conference is scheduled to kick off in September of that year. It will be the second time Taiwan has hosted the WCIT since the WCIT 2000 was held in Taipei. The WCIT is the congress of the World Information Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA), which is comprised of more than 80 members. WITSA is a consortium of associations from the information and communications technology (ICT) industry around the world, and represents more than 90 percent of the global ICT market. On behalf of Taiwan, the Information Service Industry Association of the Republic of China (????) is a member of the Steering Committee of the WITSA. According to the MOEA, the WCIT 2017 will be the first conference to be held annually after the WITSA changed its charter in 2014. It was previously held every two years. The first WCIT took place in Barcelona in 1978. Shen said the MOEA will continue to its efforts to improve its investment environment in hardware and software development by encouraging the younger generation to participate. He said that the hosting of the WCIT 2017 is expected to help Taiwan achieve the goal of helping the local ICT industry become more visible globally, as many ICT heavyweights will attend the event. The WCIT 2014 was held in Guadelajara, Mexico, while the 2016 event is scheduled to take place in Brasilia, Brazil. (By Chiu Po-sheng and Frances Huang)
