U.S. welcomes visits by Taiwan's presidential candidates: AIT

Taipei, Oct. 18 (CNA) American Institute in Taiwan Spokesperson Sonia Urbom said on Sunday that the United States welcomes visits from Taiwan's presidential candidates, in response to a CNA inquiry on a possible visit by ruling Kuomintang (KMT) Chairman Eric Chu (???). Chu was nominated KMT candidate for the January presidential election in a special party congress on Saturday, overturning the decision in July to nominate Deputy Legislative Speaker Hung Hsiu-chu (???), due to her persistent poor showing in the polls relative to that of Democratic Progressive Party candidate Tsai Ing-wen (???). Local media reported that Chu was considering a week-long trip to the U.S. to meet with U.S. officials in early or mid-November and could visit Japan on his way back to Taiwan.
