Chibi Maruko-chan visits Taichung to promote tourism

Taipei, Oct. 16 (CNA) The lead character of a popular Japanese manga series and animation, Chibi Maruko-chan (?????), visited the Taichung City government Friday to promote tourism in her birthplace of Shizuoka Prefecture and cooperation with the central Taiwan municipality. A life-sized effigy of the much-loved manga figure was part of a delegation headed by Yoshi Kusawake, an official in charge of city promotion affairs in the Shizuoka City government, that is visiting Taichung to attend the Taichung International Travel Fair Oct. 16-19. "Welcome to Maruko-chan's hometown," Kusawake said as he touted a Chibi Maruko-chan entertainment park in Shizuoka, as well as agricultural specialities of the prefecture such as green tea and strawberries. In return, Taichung City officials brought the Japanese delegation up to date on other upcoming events in the city, including an international animation exhibition and a hot spring festival, in the hope that it will bring the information back to Japan to inform prospective visitors to Taiwan. Taichung Tourism and Travel Bureau Chief Secretary Chuang Yu-meng (???) said that there have been frequent exchanges between Taichung and Japan, particularly in the sector of hot spring tourism, for many years. He expressed hope that Kusawake and Chibi Maruko-chan's visit will further boost cooperation in tourism between the two cities. According to the Tourism and Travel Bureau, thanks to an increase in the number of flights from Taichung to Japan's Okinawa and Seoul in South Korea, the number of foreign travelers flying to Taichung had increased by 36,530 as of the end of August this year, up 17.49 percent from the same period of last year. In recent years, the central Taiwan city has been sparing no efforts to attract foreign travelers to enter Taiwan through Taichung rather than via Taipei in the north of the country.
