Number of furloughed workers reaches highest since February 2014

Taipei, Oct. 16 (CNA) Twenty-nine companies have given a total of 1,239 employees unpaid leave so far this month, the highest number since February 2104, according to the latest statistics released Friday by the Ministry of Labor (MOL). Meanwhile, another report released by the Ministry of Science and Technology shows that a total of 105 employees from three industrial parks have taken unpaid leave so far in October -- 60 from one company based in the Hsinchu Science Park in northern Taiwan and 45 from two companies in the Southern Science Park in Tainan. Taiwan's export-oriented economy is vulnerable to global economic volatility, and any slowdown in global trade hurts orders for Taiwanese electronics companies. According to the MOL, half of the 29 companies that have implemented unpaid leave are in the electronics industry. At the peak of the 2008 financial crisis, over 230,000 employees were on unpaid leave. The numbers today are far lower, but the government has taken precautions in case the number of employees given unpaid leave continues to rise. (By Lin Meng-ju and Lee Mei-yu)
