First lady's dresses inspire sale for charity

Taipei, Oct. 11 (CNA) Two dresses identical to those worn by first lady Chow Mei-ching (???) on National Day were put on sale at Shin Kong Mitsukoshi (????) Department Store in Taipei on Sunday, with the proceeds to go to charity. The two garments, designed by 24-year-old Taiwanese fashion designer Wang Shao-yu (???), are being displayed at an exhibition at the department store held to showcase the best works of new designers. The dress similar to that worn by the first lady during the National Day ceremony -- a one-piece knee-length dress that seems to combine a purple blouse and a dark skirt with flowers on it -- is being sold for NT$88,888 (US$2,752). A knee-length black cocktail dress with a mesh overlay that Chow wore at the National Day reception Saturday night is being sold for NT$13,800. Wang told CNA in a telephone interview that he felt honored that the first lady chose his design and said Chow was very approachable when they first met. He pledged to donate all of the proceeds from sales of the two dresses to vulnerable groups in society. Wang graduated from the department of fashion design at Shih Chien University (????) and is now studying in Milan, Italy. (By Tsai Pei-chi and Maria Tsai)
